Welcome to the Kolkata Police Training Academy's History Page!

🏛️ Foundation: In the first decade of the 19th century, Lord Wellesley got the Maratha ditch filled up and the Circular road (upper & lower) which incidentally is the limit of the Presidency Town of Calcutta, was built. In 1960 the Lower Circular road was renamed after Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road, the great scientist. The semi-circular building housing the present Police Training Shool was originally known as Dalanda House. Dalanda is a derivative from Dolandaha, one of the 38 villages that emperor Farrukhsiyar granted permission to East India Company to take it on rent in 1717. In 1847 Dalanda House was constructed as a mental asylum. In 1906 the building became the Government Forms and Stationery Store. Initially Basic training for Calcutta Police personnel was held at Nathnagar in Bhagalpur. On 1st October, 1914 Dalanda House was converted as the Police Training School. The first few years of this school earned notoriety since it became a convenient detention centre where the revolutionaries were interrogated and tortured. It was something like a halting station from the Detective Department to the Presidency Jail. A few well-known revolutionaries also escaped by befooling the sentries of Dalanda House in 1916.

Dalanda House today houses the Police Training School, the headquarters of the Specialised Forces as well as the Police Dog Squad. This building is built in the Panopticon style of Jeremy Bentham which is commonly used in disciplinarian institutional structures like prisons and asylums as a system of control based around the idea that all the inhabitants of the building should be monitored by a single central figure or guard at all times. It is a double stroried structure with a series of semi-circular arched openings on the ground floor and rectangular openings on the first floor.

However, in order to cope with the challenges the training facility of PTS, Kolkata was upgraded, extended and relocated at Arupara, Howrah wherein Kolkata Police Training Academy started functioning since 1st December, 2018.
